Dog Shot Golf Blog – 27/06/2026
It was one of those mornings that reminds you why golf is worth all the bad shots.
Saturday 27th June. Alarm went off early, the sun was already shining, and Cowes Golf Club, on the Isle of Wight, was looking absolutely class. Light wind, not much to speak of, perfect temperatures and hardly anyone about. You couldn’t ask for a better morning to get nine holes in.
This time I had my littlest playing partner with me… Cheese. At the grand old age of eight, he was making another appearance, and instead of playing our own balls we decided to take on the course as a scramble team.
If you’ve never played a scramble, it’s basically cheating… but legally and fun, and it takes the pressure off for the Junior players. You both hit, pick the best shot, and go again from there. Which is handy when one of you is eight and the other runs Dog Shot Golf.
The goal wasn’t to beat each other. It was simple.
Could Team Cheese beat Cowes?
There were some absolute crackers. A few proper stripe shows down the fairway, some surprisingly tidy chips, and then, just to keep things balanced, the usual Dog Shot moments (especially on the 7th and 8th) where the golf ball ended up exploring parts of the course the greenkeepers probably forgot existed.
Cheese stepped up with some brilliant shots and, more importantly, had absolutely no fear (although on the 4th Cheese had a moment when he was putting, but this was easily fixed with some sweets). Watching kids play golf is brilliant because they don’t spend five minutes overthinking every swing. They just hit it and get on with it. There’s probably a lesson in that for the rest of us.
The course itself was in lovely condition. Fairways were running nicely, the greens were true (but so so fast!), and with the early morning sunshine coming through the trees it was one of those rounds where you almost forget about your score.
Almost.
As always, the light Dad / Son banter was flowing, the laughs outnumbered the pars, and that’s exactly how golf should be.
